History of The Site
Originally built in 1895, 77 Colne Road
consisted of a stables, yard and bottle-and-ale
shop. The road was a major thoroughfare into
Twickenham and a centre of local commerce
including brewers, bakers, chandlers and food
stores.
In 1925 it was converted into a butcher's
shop. Large refrigerated rooms were later added
in the yard area, plunging the back of the site
into darkness.
During the 1980s the site became a pet food
supplier and gradually fell into disrepair,
eventually closing in 2005. It looked a sorry
state.
The 2006 Re-development
Acquired by Martin Leach in September 2005,
the last few months have seen much clearing of
the site and a great deal of head scratching
while suitable plans were developed.
Martin has lived locally for over fifteen
years and is seeking to turn 77 Colne Road into
a vibrant hub of the community again. An online
diary of the development will be coming soon.
